US-based Cymbiotika has launched a high-dose magnesium l-threonate supplement in liquid format, which is touted for increased bioavailability. The launch addresses widespread magnesium deficiency.

Cymbiotika estimates that 65 percent of adults in the US don’t have enough of the electrolyte, which is required for over 300 processes within the human body.

“Magnesium is a critical mineral used throughout the body. Magnesium plays a critical role in healthy brain development, memory and learning,” Chervin Jafarieh, founder of Cymbiotika tells NutritionInsight.

Magnesium l-threonate is the only form of magnesium to cross the blood-brain barrier, providing “much needed magnesium to the brain,” notes the company.

Cymbiotika also highlights the immediate benefits of magnesium supplementation are better sleep, less stress and less anxiety.

“Over-stimulated nerve cells inside the brain can lead to early cell death. Magnesium l-threonate prevents brain damage by calming nerve cells,” adds Jafarieh.

Increasing bioavailability
Cymbiotika’s technology targets increased absorption by encasing the mineral in a fat, with organic sprouted macadamia nut butter and phosphatidylcholine as the carrier.

The lipid barrier is designed to protect the magnesium from the digestive system and deliver the mineral directly to the bloodstream.

The liquid supplement comes in a pouch, which consumers can open and squeeze into the mouth directly or mix with a food or beverage such as coffee, tea, yogurt or “a favorite treat.”

Getting enough magnesium
Supplementation with magnesium may be more relevant today than ever, as Jafarieh explains natural sources of the mineral have diminished over time in our food supply.

“We know that our soil is depleted of magnesium due to modern farming practices, which means our food is also depleted. If the body is deficient in magnesium, the brain is especially vulnerable to magnesium deficiency,” he explains.

Cymbiotika’s magnesium l-threonate has one of the highest doses per serving available at 1300 mg, notes the company.

While the dose is more than three times the daily allowance of magnesium recommended by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Jafarieh points out that standard doses of magnesium l-threonate range between 1000-2000 mgs daily.

“Magnesium l-threonate is actually a variation of magnesium. The FDA does not have a strict requirement for magnesium l-threonate,” he says.

"It is very unlikely to experience a magnesium overdose. But with any nutritional supplement, one should always stay in the recommended daily dose and consult with their licensed healthcare provider,” he adds.

Further in magnesium NPD
Magnesium has increasingly been in the spotlight as consumers reach for solutions to combat sleeplessness brought on by stay-at-home measures.

This year Israel-based Gadot Biochemical Industries launched a new magnesium citrate ingredient called Gado-Go Mg. The magnesium-rich product is touted as being immediately useful for travelers and anyone on the go, as well as for athletes, trainers and those who exercise regularly.

PepsiCo has also tapped into magnesium with its new Driftwell sleep water. The beverage contains l-theanine and magnesium to help consumers “relax, de-stress and sleep better.”
